The Lighthouse Keeper by Inkroost
/
A two-panel page shows a tall, stone lighthouse on a rocky outcrop amidst a turbulent sea under a dark, cloudy sky, followed by a man with salt-and-pepper hair, wearing a dark coat and carrying a bag, looking up at the lighthouse as he thinks, “So this is it. The edge of the world.”
Elias, a man with salt-and-pepper hair, opens a wooden door to reveal a stormy sea outside, then stands inside a stone tower and observes his surroundings.
Elias climbs a spiral staircase inside a stone tower, and in a thought bubble, he notes the smell of oil and salt.
Elias, a man with salt-and-pepper hair and a scar on his nose, stands inside a lighthouse lantern room, observing the dusty lens and the open sea, and musing about the previous keeper's hurried departure and the unusual quietness of the lighthouse.
Elias stands in a lighthouse lantern room, then kneels to pry up a floorboard, revealing a dusty, old journal hidden beneath.
Elias looks at two different pages of a heavily damaged leather-bound journal, one of which has a large drawing of a lighthouse, and he thinks to himself about the meaning of a line in the journal. A close up of the journal emphasizes the text that reads, "Day 43: Do not burn it bright on moonless nights. They rise to it."
A man with salt-and-pepper hair stands in a sparsely furnished stone room with a window looking out at a stormy sea.
A man in a dark blue coat climbs stairs toward a large lighthouse lamp at night, then pours oil into a smaller lamp, lights it with a match, and observes the now brightly lit large lamp.
A lighthouse beam sweeps across the dark ocean, and inside the lighthouse, a man with salt-and-pepper hair, wearing a pea coat, shields his eyes from the bright light before looking down to see several ghostly figures swimming underwater.
In the first panel, a beam of light shines from a lighthouse window onto dark, choppy ocean water where three large, pale, fish-like shapes are visible beneath the surface, forming concentric rings on the water. The second panel shows an open journal page that reads, "Day 43: They rise to it.." and a thought bubble that reads, "Day 43: Do not burn it bright on moonless nights." The third panel shows Elias, a grizzled man with salt-and-pepper hair, looking intently to his right while holding the brass valve of a lighthouse lamp, with a thought bubble above him that says, "If I dim it... will they leave?" The final panel is a close-up of Elias's hand turning the brass valve of the lighthouse lamp down, with a caption stating, "His hand turns the valve down."
From a lighthouse window, a beam of light shines into dark water where several white, whale-like shapes are sinking; inside the lighthouse, a man with salt-and-pepper hair, Elias, looks out a window with a pensive expression, then turns abruptly, his eyes wide, to look down a spiral staircase where a door at the bottom shows a faint light and a sound effect indicates pounding.
Elias holds a lit lamp and cautiously descends a dark, winding stone staircase.
Elias holds a lantern and looks at the wooden door of a stone building where water is seeping in from under the door, and he peers through the door's opening.
Elias opens a heavy wooden door to reveal a stormy night sea and rocky shore, then looks out at the moonlit ocean.
Elias stands in the doorway of a stone tower at night, holding a lantern, looking out at the rocky shore and the dark, choppy sea, while also shown in close-up looking thoughtful, and from behind as he touches the door handle.
A man with salt-and-pepper hair, wearing a dark blue coat, first bars a wooden door, then leans his head against it, then stands near a spreading puddle, and finally ascends a stone spiral staircase while holding a lantern.
A man climbs a winding stone staircase in a lighthouse, holding a lantern; he thinks to himself, and then he looks up to the top of the lighthouse where a light glows.
A man with salt-and-pepper hair, dressed in a dark blue coat, stands in a lighthouse adjusting a lamp and looking out at the dark, empty sea.
Elias, a man with salt-and-pepper hair, stands and then sits in a lighthouse lantern room at night, looking out at the dark ocean, before looking down at his journal open on his knee.
Elias sits on a stool inside the lighthouse, looking out at the calm ocean at dawn, then stands in three close-up panels where he has a scar on his nose and is holding an old book and later a metal oil can.
A man with salt-and-pepper hair, deep-set blue eyes, and a scar across the bridge of his nose meticulously cleans the base of a lighthouse lens with a brush and cloth, then reads an old journal before looking directly at the viewer with a determined expression.
In four panels, Elias studies the previous keeper's journal beside the lighthouse lens in daylight, realizes the knocking answers the rotating beam, then turns toward the stairwell as three knocks rise through the floor.

Elias begins his first day as the keeper of the lighthouse, discovering the strange properties of the light and the isolation of the island. He finds an old journal that hints at a mystery regarding the previous keeper.

Page 1

Panel 1: A tall, grey stone lighthouse stands on a dark, rocky island in a stormy sea, with waves crashing against the rocks under a heavily clouded sky. The light in the lighthouse is glowing orange. Panel 2: Elias, a man with salt-and-pepper hair, wearing a dark blue coat and carrying a brown messenger bag, stands with his back to the viewer, looking up at the base of the lighthouse which rises above him to the right. The sky behind him is dark with clouds. Elias: So this is it. Elias: The edge of the world.

Page 2

Cold. Like a tomb.

Page 3

The stairs go up and up. Cold air from above. Thump... thump... thump... Elias: Still smells of oil and salt. Someone left in a hurry. Above, the lantern room waits.

Page 4

The lantern room. Dust thick on the great lens. Elias: No log. No coat on the hook. He left in a hurry. Elias: Outside, only the sea. No boats. No birds. Elias: Too quiet for a working light.

Page 5

A hollow sound under his boot. One board sits wrong. Elias: That one moved. Elias: Prying. Dust. Something hidden. Elias: A journal. Hidden here.

Page 6

The leather is salt-stained. The ink has bled. Day 41: The light does not guide. It calls. Elias: Calls? What does he mean, calls? Day 43: Do not burn it bright on moonless nights. They rise to it. Day 43: Do not burn it bright on moonless nights. They rise to it.

Page 7

Evening settles. The tower creaks in the wind. No food stores. No spare oil. As if he meant to come back. Outside, the wind rises. The glass hums. First night. I must light it, journal or no.

Page 8

Night. Time to light the lamp. Trim the wick. Prime the oil. Just like the manual says. A match strikes. Burn steady, now.

Page 9

The beam catches. It turns. Elias: Steady... Elias: God, it is bright. Below, the water answers. Elias: Was that... movement down there?

Page 10

The shapes hold in the beam. Waiting. Day 43: They rise to it.. Day 43: Do not burn it bright on moonless nights. Elias: If I dim it... will they leave? His hand turns the valve down.

Page 11

The beam narrows. The water darkens. They are sinking. Good. Go back down. Then a sound from far below. Bang... bang... bang...

Page 12

The pounding stops. Silence rushes back. Who is down there? Answer me! Elias: Lamp. Take the lamp. Slow. Step by step, down into the cold.

Page 13

At the bottom, cold seeps under the door. Elias: Water? No rain in here. How? Elias: Is anyone there? Elias: The light is dimmed. Elias: Go back. No answer. Only dripping.

Page 14

His hand on the iron. It is ice. Elias: Stand back. Elias: I am opening it. The door groans open. Elias: Nothing. Only the rocks and the sea.

Page 15

Empty rock. But the stone is soaked. Elias: No boat could land here. No man could knock and vanish. On the step: water pooling uphill, toward the tower. Elias: It came from the sea. And it went back.

Page 16

He bars the door. Wood against wood. Stay out. Whatever you are. The puddle keeps spreading. Cold around his boots. Up. Back to the light. Do not leave it alone.

Page 17

Back up. Lamp shaking with each step. Elias: Do not go out. Hold till I get there. Above, a thin glow still turns. Elias: Still burning. Thank God.

Page 18

The lamp holds, low and steady. Man: Stay dim. No brighter tonight. Below, the black water is empty. Man: Gone. For now.

Page 19

He will not sleep. Not tonight. If they rise again, I will see it first. The journal lies open on his knee. Day 44: It knocked. I did not open. Day 44: It knocked: I did not open.

Page 20

Dawn greys the glass. The lamp still holds. Night one, survived. The light stayed dim. Below, the sea is calm. As if nothing happened. Tonight I learn what knocked. And I keep it dim.

Page 21

Later in the day I can't let the grime build. Not when the light needs to be pure. The lens is the only thing that matters. Clear. Perfect. Unobstructed. And the journal... the only map to this madness. Day 41... Day 42... Day 43... Day 44... Day 45... It's not just the sea. There's a pattern. A rhythm to the knocking. Day 44... Day 45... why did he stop writing? I will find out what wants in. And I will be ready. Next chapter is coming soon

Panel 1: In the daylight lantern room, Elias leans over an open journal beside the great brass lens. Caption: The last entry has a second line, buried in the fold. Panel 2: Elias studies a weathered journal held open in his hands. The caption repeats the visible handwritten entry. Day 45: Three knocks. A pause. Three more. Every time the beam comes round. Panel 3: Elias stands beside the lens, looking toward its mechanism. Elias: It wasn't asking to come in. Elias: It was answering the light. Panel 4: Elias turns toward the open stairwell inside the lantern room. Daylight remains visible through the windows. Caption: Three knocks rise through the floor. Elias: But it's daylight.
